Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Modern Warfare (Call of Duty 4) deservedly earned itself a heap of Awards during 2007. It's sequel, CoD6: Modern Warfare 2 looks to be heading to repeat it's performance if sales indicate critical acclaim and critical success.

Even taking into account books and movies, the sales figures for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 are truly staggering and pretty much every known record for an entertainment release has been shattered!

Beating Harry Potter, The Half Blood Prince and the massively controversial Grand Theft Auto 4, in it's first five days COD6: Modern Warfare 2 set all new sales records.

So far, since it's release on November 10th 2009, over Ten Million units have been sold Worldwide (as of 22nd November 2009). When you consider that a successful video game will sell around Three Million copies for the period of it's whole shelf life, CoD6:Modern Warfare2's sales success and popularity is staggering.

However, the online scene reveals the true attraction of Modern Warfare 2. Microsoft reported at least 5.2Million hours logged playing CoD6:Modern Warfare 2 by around 2.2Million unique game players - just in the 1st day alone! It's clear to see that the X-Box live service catered for droves of players logging in to Modern Warfar 2's new Multi Player maps.

Modern Warfare 2's success with Multiple Player gaming is possibly a reflection of aspects of its design. In single player, it can be completed in roughly six hours. When gamers are expecting game play of around twelve hours, it's easy to see why Modern Warfare 2's single player mode has annoyed some gamers.

A shift towards titles aimed at multi-player play, that desert narrative based experiences for free form online competition play, must surely be worrying for players who prefer single player mode, or who can't access online services or gaming networks.

A traditional cover based game it is not. In fact, there is no cover system in it at all. Instead, it forces game players to confront foes that necessitate accomplished skills to fight and defeat. As such, even in single player mode it has true appeal. It gives users one of the most demanding shooter experiences yet seen. The gory reality of Warfare is highlighted with brutal and chaotic action. The action in Rio's rambling Favelas requires split second aiming, shooting and intelligent movement.

CoD6: Modern Warfare 2 has a massive special ops section, which I guess compensates in some way for the short campaign. It provides a counterpoint, rather like arcade play, to the serious killing business, with missions ranging from Snow Mobile races to stealth ops.

A lot of of bad press was written approaching the release of CoD6: Modern Warfare 2, due to campaigns including a number of disturbing scenes. For example, shooting innocent bystanders in an Airport. Due to the controversy, and for the first time in the series, no penalties are incurred if gamers skip this scene.
